Back Injury Prevention Program Information

  1. What comes with the program?  A complete package of lift equipment and training.

  2. What should I expect when I implement the program?   You can expect dramatic decreases in back injuries immediately.  You will also have fewer other on the job injuries.

  3. For what type of healthcare organizations is this program designed?  Nursing homes, hospitals, hospices, and home health.

  4. Do any insurance companies give preferred worker compensation rates to those successfully using this program?  Yes.  They should, as cost will be substantially less.  We will help you find those companies.

  5. Why is this program better than others?  First, we are adult trainers specializing in health care back injuries.  Our Vice President of Training and our trainers are Registered Nurses.

Second, we have a time proven, copyrighted formula that achieves adult behavior modification from the first day forward.  Most programs provide training, but the employees do not modify their behavior after the training and continue to do as they have always done.  Our program changes the behaviors.

  6. Why are there both equipment and training in the package?   Both are needed to prevent back injuries.

Health care workers who lift heavy patients over a long period of time damage the soft tissue in their back.  Equipment must be used to reduce the frequency and amount of lifting necessary to prevent these repetitive motion (back) injuries.  Our patented Help-Stand ® equipment decreases the amount of patient lifting required and allows patients much more freedom and independence.

Back injuries can occur when patients fall, roll, or are especially heavy;  where lift equipment may not be able to help.  Training is mandatory to insure healthcare workers know how to handle these situations.  A key to our success, is training that teaches managers how to manage for safety and get results.

  7. What equipment do you furnish?  Our own patented, easy to use, Help-Stand ®.  It weighs on 17 pounds, snaps apart in 2 seconds for storage or travel, and allows patients to lift themselves without health care giver assistance from beds, toilets, and chairs.

  8. What does the training entail?  Training for senior level management in the basics of "Why people do what they do" and "How to implement the safety program".  We show senior level managers how to modify adult behavior.  Senior level managers can quickly use these newly learned techniques to solve production, quality, personnel, service, and safety issues.   Employee turnover will fall dramatically for those trained in the senior level management skills.

Training for existing healthcare givers and new hires includes how to lift correctly, safe lift limits for each, how to assess lift, the lift system needed, and specific circumstance lifting.  A comprehensive safety program is furnished.

Care givers are required to demonstrate correct lifting techniques and pass a written test with 100% accuracy.  Failure to pass, results in retraining.  The written test only takes 3 minutes (or less), if you understood the training.

  9. How much of my peoples' time will this training take?   The program is designed for quick and easy implementation.  Great care is taken to use as little of your employees' precious time as possible.  The senior level management training takes approximately 60 minutes and usually entails a question and answer session immediately following the training.

Training of the care givers is approximately 60 minutes, including testing.

  10. What else can the program provide?  Assistance with: drug free work place and testing program (which is integral to the program), compliance program, and statue requirements of OSHA and JCAHO in relation to back injuries.  A brief time can be spent on repetitive motion and needle sticks.

  11. What is the pay back on my investment?  The average healthcare back injury cost is $25,000 (in California) in direct costs with hidden costs for lost productivity, retraining, etc. of an additional two to three times that amount.  Lost time injuries on a national basis average 4.1% for Hospitals and 8.8% for nursing homes and home health.  46% of all caregiver injuries are back injuries, but they account for over half the cost.  The length of time to recoup your investment will depend upon how many worker compensation injuries you are sustaining and what back injury costs average in your state.

The best payback forecast quoted so far was for a hospital chain with 8,000 emloyees, 2,412 beds spread over 30 locations.  Payback forecast was for 8 days.  Call 1-800-598-9299 for specific cost quotes and further information.
